Title IX was signed into law 40 years ago today. It explicitly states "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance..."
Title IX had the biggest impact on high school and collegiate sports, as public schools and universities had to provide the same opportunities for girls and women as they would for the male gender. If there were enough girls who wanted to play basketball, then the school had to have a team if there was already a boys team or let the girls play on the boys team. Also if a boy wanted to go out for cheerleading he had the same right to participate as well.
I myself benefited from Title IX, as I ran track and cross country during Jr.High and High School. I enjoyed competitive sports and really benefited from him, physically and psychologically. I really believed if it was not for Title IX I would never have had the opportunity and would have dropped out of school.
Another person who benefited from Title IX? Sarah Louise Heath Palin. She like me ran cross country and track and played basketball during her school years. She complains about the Federal Government being a nuisance and that they should get out of the way, but the Title IX federal law did her, her sisters, and her daughters a lot of good.
